Overview

This scholarship offers AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards at Birmingham City University for PhD students. It is a major funding scheme from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) aimed at increasing the UK's capacity for doctoral research in the arts and humanities and fostering an inclusive research culture. Birmingham City University (BCU) is offering six fully funded PhD studentships for September 2027 entry, with three funded by the AHRC and three match-funded by BCU. Students will join a cohort from across the Midlands, benefiting from an interdisciplinary training environment and a wide network of researchers.

Coverage

The scholarship provides six fully funded PhD studentships. These cover home tuition fees, a stipend, and additional funding opportunities. Specifically, one international applicant per year will receive a full tuition fee waiver and a stipend at the UKRI rate. Awardees will also benefit from participation in the East and West Midlands Regional Hub, which offers collaborative training, professional development, and networking opportunities. Expert supervision and mentoring from leading arts and humanities researchers are included, along with access to a welcoming, inclusive research environment with strong connections to cultural and industry partners.

Eligibility

This scheme is open to both UK/Home and International applicants, including Ethiopian students. You must not already hold a doctoral-level qualification. You cannot currently be enrolled as a doctoral student at Birmingham City University or any other institution. Your proposed research must fall within one of the AHRC’s primary subject areas, with at least 50% of your project focusing on these areas. Interdisciplinary proposals are welcome. A minimum of one studentship each year is dedicated to a Global Majority candidate.
