Overview
The ANU RTP Scholarship is a fully funded opportunity for international and domestic students to pursue a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Australia. It is offered by the Australian National University (ANU) with significant support from the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP). Coverage
This is a fully funded scholarship. Benefits include:
- An RTP living stipend of AUD 39,069 per year (2026 rate), paid fortnightly, for up to 3.5 years for PhD students and up to 1.5 years for MPhil students.
- An RTP Fee Offset, which covers full tuition fees for the eligible Higher Degree by Research program.
- A relocation allowance if you need to move to Canberra to start your studies.
- A thesis allowance to help pay for approved thesis-related expenses.
- A dependent child allowance for eligible international students with children.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) reimbursement for eligible international recipients.
- Paid medical, maternity, or parental leave, subject to scholarship requirements.

Eligibility
- Open to both domestic and international students, including those from Ethiopia.
- Must apply for an eligible Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program at the Australian National University (ANU), specifically a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
- Must meet the admission requirements for your chosen research program.
- Must meet the English language requirements set by ANU.
- Must submit your application before the relevant scholarship deadline.
- Scholarships are awarded through a competitive selection process. ANU considers factors such as your academic record, research experience (where applicable), referee reports, and other evidence of your research potential. Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee a scholarship.

How to apply
- New applicants do not need to submit a separate scholarship application. When you apply for admission to an eligible Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program at the Australian National University (ANU), you will automatically be considered for an RTP Scholarship if you meet the eligibility requirements.
- Choose an eligible research degree at ANU, such as a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
- Review the admission requirements for your chosen program, including the academic and English language requirements.
- Prepare the required documents for your application.
- Submit your online application for admission through the official ANU application portal before the relevant application deadline.
- ANU will assess your application for admission and automatically consider eligible new applicants for the RTP Scholarship. If you are successful, the University will notify you of both your admission and scholarship outcome.
- Current ANU students (enrolled typically for less than a year full-time equivalent) can also be considered by completing the 'Request for a current ANU student to be considered for a HDR Scholarship form'.
