Overview

The DIW Berlin Graduate Center offers a structured 5-year PhD program in Economics in Germany. The program is designed for students interested in economics, evidence-based policy research, and academic careers. It involves collaborative coursework with the Berlin School of Economics.

Coverage

There are no tuition fees. Students receive a monthly stipend of 1,650 euros during the first year (course phase). For years 2–5 (research phase), funding is provided through employment at one of DIW Berlin’s research departments (TVöD, EG 13, 75%). Students are responsible for semester fees of approximately 380 euros.

Eligibility

Open to international students, including those from Ethiopia, who hold or are near completion of a Master’s degree or diploma in Economics, Business Studies, or related quantitative fields (e.g., statistics, civil engineering).

Requirements

Applicants must submit a completed application form, academic transcripts, degree certificates, CV/resume, motivation letter, GRE General Test results, English language proficiency test results, and two academic recommendation letters. The application must be completed in English.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the official DIW Berlin online application portal during the active application period. If interested in both the DIW Graduate Center and the Berlin School of Economics, separate applications must be submitted for each.

Notes

Enrolling at a Berlin university is recommended to secure student health insurance and public transport access. Admission is competitive and based on academic merit.
