Overview

The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation offers scholarships for international students pursuing Master's and PhD degrees at Japanese graduate schools. The scholarship aims to support exceptional individuals, foster international friendship, and promote cultural exchange by enabling students to focus on their education and professional growth in Japan.

Coverage

Scholars receive a monthly stipend: ¥230,000 per month for degrees lasting one to two years, ¥210,000 per month for three-year degrees, and ¥180,000 per month for degrees lasting beyond three years. Additionally, grants are provided for travel to academic conferences both within Japan and internationally. Recipients also gain access to a global scholarly community. It is important to note that recipients are generally not permitted to hold other scholarships concurrently, with specific exceptions for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students, JSPS International Fellowship, and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Fellowship (limited to those approved by JST for concurrent receipt).

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to foreign students from all nationalities, including Ethiopians, who are studying or plan to study for a Master's or Doctoral degree at a Japanese graduate school. Applicants can apply from abroad if they have been accepted to a Japanese graduate school. All research fields are welcome. Direct applications to the foundation are accepted without requiring pre-selection by a university.

Requirements

Applicants must submit a completed application form, degree certificate, academic transcript, valid passport, an updated CV or resume, and a letter of acceptance or admission from a Japanese university (if available). A two-minute video, in either Japanese or English, outlining the applicant's research plan is required, along with a detailed research proposal and recommendation letter(s). Proof of English language proficiency results is also necessary.

How to apply

First, confirm your eligibility. Then, access the online application system via the official website. You will need to sign up, fill out the application form, and upload all required documents and files, including the two-minute video explaining your research plan. After successful submission, an application number will be issued, and a PDF of your application form will be generated for your records.

Notes

The application period for the 2027 scholarship is from September 1, 2026, to October 31, 2026. The official application guidelines for the 2027 scholarship will be announced in August 2026.
