Overview

The Harvard University Berenson Fellowship offers an excellent residential research opportunity for scholars focusing on the Italian Renaissance and its global connections. Hosted by Villa I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, Italy, the program encourages research into transnational dialogues between Renaissance Italy and other cultures, including those in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Mediterranean.

Coverage

Successful fellows receive a monthly stipend of USD $5,200 and a relocation supplement of up to USD $1,800. The fellowship is residential, lasting either four or six months. Benefits include access to the Biblioteca Berenson, Harvard Center resources, a personal desk or carrel in the library, and opportunities to participate in lectures, conferences, and concerts, fostering an international scholarly community.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application and should not be pursuing a second PhD. They are expected to dedicate their time solely to the proposed research project. Priority is given to early and mid-career scholars. Applicants must be conversant in English and have familiarity with Italian. The fellowship welcomes scholars from various academic fields, including history, art history, architecture, philosophy, literature, music, and the history of science, particularly those exploring Italy's connections with African, Asian, Latin American, and Mediterranean cultures during the Renaissance.

Requirements

Applicants should prepare a research proposal, a comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV), and arrange for two letters of recommendation. A scanned copy of the PhD certificate must be uploaded during the application process.

How to apply

The application process involves submitting an online application through the official website. Additionally, applicants must ensure that their recommenders submit their letters of recommendation directly by the specified deadline.

Notes

This is a residential fellowship, requiring fellows to spend at least three days each week at the center in Florence. The program is designed to provide dedicated time for advanced research within a vibrant international scholarly community.
