Overview

This is a fully funded MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) scholarship offered by the Japanese Government for international students to pursue Master's and PhD degrees at Hokkaido University in Japan.

Coverage

The scholarship is fully funded, covering application fees, admission fees, and tuition fees. It also provides arrival and return air tickets, along with a monthly stipend of 144,000 Yen for Master's degree students and 145,000 Yen for Doctoral degree students. The scholarship duration is 2 years for Master's programs and 3 years for PhD programs.

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to all international students from countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan. Applicants must have an academic record score of 2.30 (out of 3.00) or above from their latest or current academic institution and be expected to maintain this academic standard throughout the scholarship program. Candidates must be residing outside Japan and must have completed or be expected to complete their previous degree before October 2027. Knowledge of the Japanese language is not mandatory; an English Proficiency Certificate from your university is accepted in lieu of IELTS/TOEFL scores.

Requirements

Required documents include a copy of a valid passport, previous academic transcripts, a field of study and research plan, abstracts of graduation thesis and publications, graduation/expected graduation certificates, one letter of recommendation, and an English test score or an English proficiency certificate from your university.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online. You need to visit the official link provided, create an account in the Online Application Portal, fill out the application form, and upload all necessary documents. There are three main ways to apply for the MEXT scholarship: through an Embassy recommendation (applicants should check with the Japanese Embassy or Consular Office in their home country for specific application periods), through a University recommendation (where Hokkaido University screens and nominates candidates), or via Domestic selection (for students already residing in Japan). For university recommendation, it is advised to contact the division of international student affairs at the graduate school you wish to enter to request a “Letter of Acceptance” after identifying a prospective supervisor.

Notes

Hokkaido University, established in 1876, is a prestigious national institution located in Hokkaido, Japan, and is ranked 122nd globally by QS. This scholarship offers a significant opportunity for students worldwide to pursue advanced degrees in Japan without the need for Japanese language proficiency.
