Overview

MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship 2027 in Japan is a fully funded opportunity for international students pursuing a Bachelor's degree at top Japanese national universities. It is provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of Japan. The program includes a one-year preparatory course in Japanese language and other subjects, followed by academic studies.

Coverage

This is a fully funded scholarship. Grantees will receive a monthly allowance of 117,000 yen, with an additional regional allowance of 2,000 to 3,000 yen for designated areas. Entrance examination fees and tuition fees at Japanese universities are waived. Travel expenses to Japan and return airfare after completion of the program are covered. Universities may provide residence halls for international students under certain conditions.

Eligibility

Ethiopian students are eligible. This scholarship is open to international students, excluding Japanese nationals. Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 2002. Candidates must have completed 12 years of education outside Japan or an equivalent qualification. Applicants should be willing to learn the Japanese language and conduct their academic studies in Japanese. They must obtain a "Student" visa before entering Japan. Non-eligible candidates include military personnel, those who have previously received a MEXT scholarship, those applying to another MEXT program, students already admitted to a Japanese university with "Student" status, or those planning to avail other scholarships concurrently.

Requirements

Required documents include: Application Form (with a recent photograph), attested academic transcripts for all school years, graduation certificate, recommendation letter from a class teacher or principal, medical certificate (signed by a physician), Direct Placement Preference Form, certificate of enrollment in a university (if applicable), certificate of university enrollment qualification examination (if applicable), and a certificate of language proficiency in English or Japanese.

How to apply

Applicants must submit all required documents to the Japanese diplomatic mission (Embassy or Consulate General) in their home country before the specified deadline. The application form can be typed or handwritten. The first screening involves an evaluation of submitted documents, written academic examinations, and interviews. Successful candidates from the first screening will be recommended to MEXT for the final selection. Do not send application documents directly to MEXT in Japan.

Notes

The scholarship duration is 5-7 years, which includes a one-year preparatory education period, depending on the degree program. Grantees are not permitted to change their courses or transfer to another university during the scholarship period. Compulsory subjects in the preparatory course must be studied. Applicants must arrive in Japan between April 1, 2027, and April 7, 2027. Failure to obtain a "Student" visa or arrive by the deadline will result in the cancellation of scholarship payments.
