Funding fully funded Overview
The National University of Singapore (NUS) offers scholarships for international students pursuing undergraduate, research master's, and PhD degrees in Singapore. These scholarships provide financial support to help students cover their study and living expenses.
Coverage
Undergraduate Scholarships (NUS International Undergraduate Scholarship): Provide full coverage of subsidized tuition fees (after the compulsory MOE Tuition Grant), an annual living allowance of S$5,800, an annual accommodation allowance of S$5,000, and a one-time computer allowance of S$1,750.
Graduate Research Scholarships (NUS Research Scholarship): Offer a full tuition-fee waiver. International research master’s students receive a stipend of S$2,900 per month. International PhD students receive S$3,000 per month, which increases by S$500 after passing the qualifying examination. The maximum funding period is generally two years for a research master’s and four years for a PhD, subject to renewal and satisfactory academic progress.
Eligibility
These scholarships are open to international students from countries other than Singapore, including Ethiopian citizens.
For Undergraduate Study: Applicants must demonstrate strong school results, leadership potential, and co-curricular achievements. Transfer applicants are not eligible.
For Graduate Research Study (Master’s by Research and PhD): Applicants typically need an undergraduate degree equivalent to at least upper second-class honours or honours with distinction. Specific departments may have additional admission requirements.
Service Obligation: International recipients who receive the Tuition Grant must commit to working for a Singapore-registered company for three years after graduation. Separate service conditions apply for Medicine and Dentistry graduates. Research scholars must fulfill Graduate Assistantship Programme duties, but no specific service bond is listed for them.
Requirements
General Documents: Passport or other requested identity document, school certificates or university degree certificates, academic transcripts and examination results, required language or admission-test results, records of relevant activities and achievements, and translations or certified copies where requested.
Undergraduate Specific: Applicants must identify their correct qualification category, meet subject prerequisites for their chosen program, and indicate if final results are available or pending. Any required tests, interviews, or additional assessments must be completed.
Graduate Research Specific: A CV, statement of purpose, and referee details are essential. A research proposal, publications, or project information may be requested depending on the program.
Language Proficiency: Review the specific language test requirements (e.g., TOEFL or IELTS) for your admission route, especially if your native language or bachelor’s teaching language is not English. Do not assume an English-medium certificate will be accepted for every program; confirm with the relevant department.
Application Fee: A S$20 admission application fee applies to international students presenting international qualifications (excluding Music).
How to apply
General Steps:
1. Decide whether to apply for undergraduate or graduate research admission.
2. Confirm your qualification category, the specific program requirements, and the application deadline.
3. Prepare all necessary documents as required by the faculty or admission portal.
4. Submit your admission application through the relevant NUS admission portal (the official Applicant Portal for undergraduates, NUS GradApp for graduate research).
5. For research study, ensure you indicate your interest in scholarship support during the application process.
6. Regularly monitor the application portal and your email for any assessment invitations, requests for additional information, or final decisions.
Undergraduate Specific: Follow the current undergraduate application overview and the guide specific to your qualification.
Graduate Research Specific: Choose a research program, carefully read its faculty admissions page, review the department’s research areas, and prepare all required documents and arrange your references in advance.
Notes
Admission to a program and scholarship selection are separate decisions. It is crucial to read your actual award letter carefully to understand the payment schedule, funding period, and conditions for continuing support. Be aware of the service bond obligations if you accept the MOE Tuition Grant.
