Overview

The New York Times Fellowship is a one-year, full-time paid program designed to cultivate the next generation of journalists for The Times and the broader news industry. It targets early-career journalists, including reporters, editors, and visual journalists, providing them with professional experience and development opportunities.

Coverage

This is a fully-funded opportunity providing full-time paid employment and comprehensive employee benefits. Fellows will gain one year of professional journalism experience, receive mentorship from experienced journalists and editors, and benefit from regular feedback. The program includes learning sessions with newsroom leaders, access to training, a writing coach, speakers, and various online resources. Fellows will also have access to Employee Resource Groups.

Eligibility

This fellowship is open to early-career journalists, including recent college graduates, who possess some prior experience in journalism. Individuals with more than five years of paid, professional journalism experience are not eligible. A critical requirement is that applicants must have legal permission to work in the USA at the time of application and for the entire duration of the fellowship. The New York Times does not offer work visa sponsorship. Applicants holding a valid student visa who are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) may be considered. You may apply for only one fellowship position per year.

Requirements

Applicants will need to provide their name, email address, and contact number. Educational information, including the discipline of their degree, must be entered. A video, website, or portfolio link showcasing journalism work is required. Additional documents or materials may be requested depending on the specific job description of each role. Applicants may also optionally mention their disability status.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online through the official New York Times website. You must select a specific role (e.g., Reporting, Visuals, Data Journalism, Opinion) and complete a separate application form for that chosen role. The application process involves filling out personal details, educational background, journalism experience, and uploading required documents and portfolio links. Review your application thoroughly before submission.

Notes

The fellowship is a one-year program scheduled to begin in June 2027 and conclude in May 2028. Approximately 30 fellows are accepted annually. Work locations may include New York, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, depending on the specific placement. The application deadline is November 20, 2026, at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
