Overview

The OIST Visiting Scholars Program (TSVP) in Japan is a fully funded research program offered by the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST). It aims to bring leading researchers to OIST for extended visits, typically lasting 3 to 12 months, to conduct independent research and interact with OIST Research Units. The program spans all fields of research. Up to 30 visiting scholars will be selected.

Coverage

This is a fully funded program. It covers round-trip airfare, on-campus accommodation, office space for research work, and per diem support for living expenses. Logistical and administrative support, as well as access to computer resources, library, and various research facilities, are also provided. In exceptional situations, support with salary may be available if necessary and evidence of need is provided. The program has no application fees.

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field and be independent researchers. Candidates should hold an academic position equivalent to a senior postdoctorate, junior group leader, or faculty member at a research institution. The program is open to all disciplines and fields of research. OIST encourages applications from women and underrepresented groups. Ethiopian students are eligible as there are no nationality restrictions.

Requirements

Required documents include: * CV (including a list of publications). * Valid passport. * Transcripts/degree certificates. * Research proposal. * A title and abstract for a general-audience talk. * Proposals for additional outreach activity, research seminars, short courses for graduate students, or career talks (optional but encouraged). Applicants requiring lab access should apply as “Experimental Visiting Scholars”.

How to apply

Applications are accepted via Interfolio only: 1. Create a new account on Interfolio or use an existing Google email address to sign in. 2. Create your profile by entering the required information. 3. Fill out the online application form, including personal and contact details, and educational background/qualifications. 4. Upload all required documents. 5. Answer all questions asked in the form. 6. Review the information provided. 7. Submit your application form. Visiting Scholars are expected to deliver a general-audience lecture about their field within the first month of their visit. Research seminars, lectures for graduate students, and proposals for additional outreach activities are strongly encouraged.

Notes

The program duration is 3-12 months. There are no mandatory teaching responsibilities, though participation in seminars/lectures and proposals for courses are encouraged. The program aims to promote diversity and inclusion.
