Overview

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation PhD Scholarship is designed for doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences. It supports research that contributes to the advancement of Canada and society, encouraging scholars to engage with major societal issues and grow through mentorship.

Coverage

This scholarship offers an annual stipend of up to $50,000 for three years, intended to cover tuition fees and living expenses. Additionally, an annual allowance of up to $20,000 is provided for three years to support research activities, networking opportunities, and travel related to the doctoral project and Foundation programming. Recipients also gain membership in a dynamic community of Scholars, Mentors, and Fellows, and lifelong access to the Foundation’s alumni network, which comprises over 500 individuals.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must be doctoral students who are in the first or second year of their PhD program at the time of application. Importantly, international students are eligible ONLY if they are currently enrolled at a Canadian university. International students residing outside Canada or enrolled at a university outside Canada are not eligible. Your field of study must be broadly related to the humanities or social sciences and address issues relevant to Canada’s future, aligning with at least one of the Foundation’s four themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada and the World, or People and their Natural Environment.

Requirements

Strong applicants typically demonstrate academic excellence supported by an outstanding academic record. They must propose a compelling research project that addresses issues shaping Canada’s future, show a strong commitment to making a positive impact through initiatives or collaborations, and be willing to engage in dialogue, interdisciplinary collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Three letters of reference are required: one from your PhD supervisor, one from another academic referee, and one from a referee outside academia.

How to apply

The application process is two-step. First, interested applicants must complete an eligibility screening form by October 2, 2026. Only applicants whose eligibility is confirmed will then be granted access to the full application form to continue with the 2027 Scholarship application process. Applications that do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be reviewed, so it is crucial to review the requirements carefully before submitting.
