The Portugal AQUA Research Scholarship 2026 is a financed research opportunity in Portugal. It is sponsored by the MultiAlive Project (Multi-observational Techniques for the Detection of Toxic Algal Blooms and the Prediction of Contamination in Offshore Bivalve Aquaculture), managed by S2AQUAcoLAB. The project aims to improve detection of dangerous algal blooms and understand contamination risks in offshore shellfish aquaculture. This scholarship is for graduates interested in aquaculture research, biotechnology, and marine sciences, offering practical scientific training and a chance to contribute to a significant EU-funded marine research project. The research work is temporary, lasting 8 months.

Coverage

Selected applicants will receive a monthly stipend of €1,090.98. The scholarship also covers personal accident insurance and reimbursement for voluntary social insurance (where applicable). Non-financial benefits include eight months of full-time financed research work, direct involvement in an EU-funded maritime research project, instruction in cutting-edge field and laboratory research techniques, experience writing scientific papers and reports, and access to Portugal’s growing aquaculture and marine biotechnology research ecosystem. There is also a possibility of developing a future master’s thesis within the project parameters.

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to international students. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Marine Sciences, Biotechnology, or related fields. They must also be enrolled in an integrated master’s program, a master’s program, a doctoral program, or a non-degree-granting integrated program at a higher education institution. The scholarship is awarded on an exclusive basis.

Notes

The fellowship is scheduled to begin at a date to be determined in consultation with the selected candidate and will last for 8 months on a full-time basis. The work is temporary and will not continue beyond the project's completion. The scholarship adheres to S2AQUAcoLAB and FCT scholarship regulations.
