Overview

The Toronto Metropolitan University Global Migration Institute offers a limited number of stipends through its Bridging Divides program. These stipends are available for full-time Master’s and PhD students who are studying or applying to study at Toronto Metropolitan University, focusing on a topic related to one of Bridging Divides’ four research themes. Recipients will be integrated into the TMU Global Migration Institute team, participating in research training activities and workshops to gain comprehensive scientific and professional development experience.

Coverage

Master’s students (incoming first-year and existing second-year): Up to $35,000 CAD per year for a maximum of two years for incoming students. Available to both domestic and international students. PhD students (existing): Up to $45,000 CAD per year for a maximum of three years. Available to both domestic and international students. Renewals are contingent on an annual review of the student’s progress and the availability of funds. Graduate students holding external grants may apply for a top-up from Bridging Divides with strong justification, considered on a case-by-case basis.

Eligibility

Applicants must be full-time Master’s or PhD students studying or applying to study at Toronto Metropolitan University. Their research must be connected to one of Bridging Divides’ four themes: Immigrant Health and Well-Being, Employment and Lifelong Learning, Place and Infrastructure, or Citizenship and Participation. Supervisors or co-supervisors must be TMU faculty members directly involved in the program. Ethiopian students are eligible as the opportunity is open to international students.

Requirements

1. Indication of the program(s) at TMU you have applied for. 2. Curriculum Vitae (CV). 3. Academic Transcript. 4. Statement of Interest/Letter of Intent from your Master’s program application. 5. A Bridging Divides motivation letter (maximum 2 pages) stating your intent to apply for the Graduate Stipend, justifying why you should receive it, and explaining how your research relates to at least one of the four research themes. 6. Name of proposed/expected supervisor(s), one of whom must be a Bridging Divides researcher. 7. For FEAS (Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science) applicants only: A written statement from the FEAS Associate Dean of Graduate Studies confirming that the applicant meets admission requirements.

How to apply

First, you must apply to your desired Toronto Metropolitan University Master’s or PhD program(s). After submitting your university program application, you should then submit an online application form specifically for the Bridging Divides Graduate Student Stipend. Your stipend application will only be considered if you are accepted into your chosen TMU Master’s or PhD program. Detailed instructions and the link to the online application form can be found on the official Global Migration Institute Scholarships website.

Notes

The stipends are for students enrolling in Fall 2027. The deadline for PhD applications is February 1, 2027, and for Master's applications is April 1, 2027.
