Overview

The World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program is a six-month paid fellowship designed for young, talented African nationals who are PhD candidates or recent PhD graduates. It aims to build the capacity of the next generation of African scholars in development research and policymaking, contributing to the World Bank's goals of reducing poverty and increasing shared prosperity. Fellows will gain hands-on experience working in an international environment, specifically in research, economic policy, technical assistance, and lending operations. The fellowship runs from January 2027 to June 2027.

Coverage

This is a fully-funded fellowship. Benefits include consultant fees for the six-month duration, round-trip economy airfare between the fellow's university and Washington, D.C. (or the assigned World Bank Group office), hands-on experience working with World Bank Group teams, and professional networking opportunities with experts and fellow professionals.

Eligibility

Applicants must be Sub-Saharan Africa nationals. Women are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates must be either currently enrolled in the last year of a PhD program or be recent PhD graduates (within three years of PhD completion). Applicants must be under the age of 32 years. An excellent command of English in both written and oral communication is required, along with strong analytical and quantitative skills. Applicants must also be committed to being available in person throughout the fellowship tenure.

Requirements

While specific documents are not listed, applicants are expected to provide their academic record, any other requested information, and supporting documents if needed. They must also describe how they will contribute to the development of society after completing the fellowship.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted through the official World Bank Group website. Candidates should carefully fill in the application form, ensuring all required fields are completed, and provide accurate academic records and other necessary information. A statement describing their potential contribution to society post-fellowship is also required.

Notes

The application deadline is August 25, 2026. The selection process involves a shortlisting of candidates, followed by a final selection in consultation with various units of the WBG. Only shortlisted applicants will be notified. Selected candidates will be hired as World Bank consultants for the six-month duration. The fellowship takes place in Washington, D.C., United States, or potentially in World Bank Group country offices.
