Overview

The Writers of the Future Contest is a prestigious international competition for amateur science fiction and fantasy writers. It aims to discover and encourage new talent in the genre.

Coverage

Quarterly prizes include $1,000 (1st), $750 (2nd), and $500 (3rd). The quarterly first-place winners compete for an additional $5,000 Grand Prize. Winners also receive an invitation to an annual awards ceremony, with travel and hotel expenses covered, plus a professional writer's workshop.

Eligibility

The contest is open to new and amateur writers worldwide, including Ethiopian citizens. You are eligible if you have not professionally published a novel, short novel, more than one novelette, or more than three short stories in any medium.

Requirements

Entries must be original, unpublished works of prose (short stories under 10,000 words or novelettes under 17,000 words) in the science fiction, fantasy, or dark fantasy genres. Submissions must be in English. AI-generated content is strictly prohibited. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.

How to apply

Submissions can be made electronically via the official contest portal or by mail. For electronic submissions, ensure the manuscript is double-spaced and does not contain the author's name to maintain anonymous judging. Register and upload your entry at the official website.

Notes

The contest year is divided into four quarters (ending March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31). Each entrant may submit only one manuscript per quarter.
