Overview

The DAAD/EPOS Scholarships are available for the Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Governance (MEG) program at the University of Freiburg in Germany. This scholarship targets young professionals from developing countries.

Coverage

This is a fully-funded scholarship. Benefits include monthly payments of 992 euros for graduates (Master's students). Doctoral candidates, if applicable, receive 1,300 euros (or 1,400 euros from February 2026). It also covers health, accident, and personal liability insurance, a travel allowance (if not covered by other sources), a monthly rent subsidy, and a monthly allowance for accompanying family members.

Eligibility

Applicants must be young professionals from developing countries (DAC countries). They must hold an academic degree obtained no more than six years prior to the application deadline (October 2026). A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience post-Bachelor's degree is required; internships and voluntary work are not accepted, and academic employment (teaching/research) is generally not considered relevant. Applicants must have an above-average academic degree (upper third) and must not have resided in Germany for more than 15 months before applying. Candidates must meet both DAAD EPOS requirements and the admission criteria for the MEG program. Those who already hold a Master's degree must provide a strong justification for pursuing another postgraduate degree.

Requirements

Required documents include: the DAAD Application Form, the MEG application form (to be filled and sent as the online portal is closed), a letter of motivation, a CV, and academic transcripts. Reference letters must be sent directly by the referees.

How to apply

All required application documents (except reference letters) must be compressed or merged into a single PDF file and sent via email to [email protected] Referees are responsible for sending their reference letters directly to the same email address. The application for the scholarship and the MEG program are linked, meaning the submitted documents serve for both.

Notes

This is a highly competitive scholarship. The application deadline for the scholarship is October 15, 2026, for studies beginning in October 2027. Incomplete applications will not be considered. If applicants do not meet the scholarship requirements, they may consider applying for regular admission to the MEG program, for which the deadline is typically May 15, 2026.
