Overview

The Walter W. Ristow Prize is an annual academic competition that recognizes excellence in the history of cartography. It is open to students worldwide to encourage new scholars in the field.

Coverage

The winner receives a cash award of $1,500. The winning paper will be published in the society's journal, 'The Portolan'.

Eligibility

Open to all full-time or part-time undergraduate, graduate, and first-year doctoral students enrolled at any accredited college or university globally, including Ethiopia.

Requirements

Applicants must submit a research paper or bibliographic study related to the history of cartography. Papers must be in English, not exceed 7,500 words, and must not have been previously published or currently under consideration for publication. Inclusion of graphics and maps is encouraged.

Submit your paper as a Word or PDF document via email to the Ristow Prize Committee Chair, Deepak Bhattasali, at [email protected]. The document must include a title page with your name, contact details, and academic status. Your name must not appear on any other page of the document.

Notes

Publication of the winning paper in 'The Portolan' is a mandatory requirement to receive the cash prize. The deadline for submission is June 1st of each year.
