Overview

The Global Investigative Journalism Conference (GIJC27) will be held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from October 19 to 23, 2027. This five-day international event, organized by the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) and the Dutch-Flemish Association of Investigative Journalists (VVOJ), aims to bring together journalists, media experts, and trainers from over 100 countries. It offers more than 150 sessions, workshops, and training activities focused on improving reporting skills and building international connections in areas like investigative journalism, data journalism, artificial intelligence, climate reporting, and online research tools.

Coverage

This is a fully funded fellowship. It covers round-trip airfare to Rotterdam (or the nearest major airport), four nights of hotel accommodation, airport transfers, free conference registration, breakfast and lunch during the conference (October 20-23, 2027), a welcome cocktail reception on October 19, 2027, and an award ceremony dinner on October 22, 2027. Participants will also gain access to all conference sessions and networking opportunities.

Eligibility

This fellowship is open to professional journalists from developing or transitioning countries, the Global South, and historically underrepresented groups. This includes journalists working in print, online media, television, radio, video, documentaries, or multimedia, as well as freelance journalists. While experience in investigative or data journalism is an advantage, it is not strictly required. Applicants must have a working knowledge of English. Journalists from countries not on an eligible list may still apply if they can demonstrate financial need. Ethiopian students/citizens are eligible as Ethiopia is a developing country in the Global South.

Requirements

All applications must be submitted in English. Selected fellows must agree to write a story related to GIJC27 or give a presentation about what they learned after the conference.

How to apply

Applicants should visit the official GIJC27 Fellowship application form. Before applying, it is important to read the eligibility criteria and fellowship requirements. The application form requires personal details (name, nationality, contact information) and details about your journalism work and professional background. All required sections must be completed in English. If you need financial support but your country is not on the eligible list, you must explain your situation in the “Additional Notes” section of the form. Review all information carefully and submit the application before the deadline.

Notes

The conference duration is 5 days. The host city is Rotterdam, Netherlands. The specific location is de Doelen ICC Rotterdam.
