Overview

The Hanjo Foundation Scholarship 2027 in Japan is a scholarship program for foreign students from all nationalities, particularly those from developing nations, who wish to pursue Master's or PhD degrees at Japanese universities. The scholarship is offered by the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation and aims to support bright, career-oriented individuals who are passionate about serving their home countries and fostering international understanding and cultural exchange.

Coverage

The scholarship provides a monthly stipend, with the amount varying based on the program duration: - ¥230,000 per month for degrees lasting 1 to 2 years. - ¥210,000 per month for degrees lasting 3 years. - ¥180,000 per month for degrees lasting 4 to 5 years or beyond 3 years. Recipients also have the opportunity to participate in conferences and other events organized by the Foundation, with a traveling grant provided to attend these conferences.

Eligibility

Applicants must be foreign students (non-Japanese citizens) who are currently studying or planning to study for a Master's or PhD degree in a Japanese graduate school. All nationalities and research fields are welcome. Applicants must be passionate about serving their home country after completing their degree and have a good understanding of international friendship. A basic conversational ability in the Japanese language is required. The enrollment duration for the chosen program must be more than 12 months. Applicants must not be receiving any other scholarships concurrently, with the exception of specific Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships, Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarships for Privately Financed International Students, JSPS International Fellowships, or Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Fellowships (if approved for concurrent receipt). Undergraduate and non-degree students are not eligible.

Requirements

The following documents are typically required: - A recent passport-style face photograph (maximum 500 KB, JPG or GIF format). - A 2-minute video introducing and explaining the research plan (maximum 1 GB, MP4 or MOV format, in Japanese or English, with the applicant’s face clearly visible). - Official academic transcripts. - A research proposal/research plan. - A recommendation letter. - An admission letter or letter of acceptance from a Japanese graduate school (if available/applicable according to the application stage).

How to apply

Applicants should first confirm their eligibility. Then, they need to access the “online application system” on the official website. The application form must be filled out, and all required files and documents, including the 2-minute research video, must be uploaded. Upon submission, an application number will be issued, and a PDF of the application form will be generated, which should be saved. The selection process involves a first phase of document screening, followed by a second phase interview, and finally, the announcement of the third phase final results.

Notes

The application period for the 2027 scholarship is from September 1, 2026, to October 31, 2026. The application guidelines for the 2027 scholarship are typically announced in August 2026. Applicants are encouraged to verify all information through the official source.
