Overview

The Harvard LEAD Fellowship is a fully funded, one-year program designed for global health professionals from low- and middle-income countries. Offered by the Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) in collaboration with the Department of Global Health and Population at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, this fellowship aims to strengthen leadership skills, advance careers, and create a lasting impact in their organizations and communities. The program includes a 12-month virtual curriculum with a six-week in-person experience at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, during Spring 2028.

Coverage

This is a fully funded fellowship. Selected fellows receive comprehensive financial support, including round-trip airfare for travel to and from the United States, financial assistance for obtaining the required J-1 visa, accommodation during the six-week in-person fellowship period, and a living stipend to cover daily expenses during their stay in the United States.

Eligibility

The fellowship is open to all nationalities, specifically targeting professionals from low- and middle-income countries. Applicants must hold at least a relevant master’s degree and possess 10 or more years of professional experience beyond their education. Candidates must be working full-time in global health with demonstrated leadership experience, be based and actively working in an eligible low- or middle-income country, and be willing to return to their home country after the fellowship. They must be available for the six-week in-person program at Harvard in April 2028 and meet all U.S. J-1 visa requirements. Required institutional support, mentor commitment, and reference letters are also necessary.

Requirements

Applicants are required to prepare a comprehensive application package. This includes their CV, a letter of intent, four essays, an institutional commitment letter, a mentor commitment letter, and two additional reference letters.

How to apply

To apply for the Harvard LEAD Fellowship, candidates should visit the official Harvard LEAD Fellowship website. It is crucial to carefully review all eligibility requirements and application instructions provided on the site. After preparing all the required documents, applicants must complete the official online application form and submit all materials before the specified deadline. Selection decisions are expected to be announced in Spring 2027.

Notes

The full name of the fellowship is the "Harvard LEAD Fellowship for Promoting Women in Global Health." The overall program period is from September 1, 2027, to August 31, 2028, with the intensive in-person component taking place in Spring 2028, specifically in April 2028. The program offers a highly customized experience with one-on-one leadership coaching, mentorship, an executive education course, speaking events, private leadership masterclasses led by Harvard faculty, and extensive networking opportunities.
