Overview

The JASNA Essay Contest is an annual competition designed to encourage the study and appreciation of Jane Austen's works among students worldwide. Participants are invited to write an essay based on a specific annual topic regarding Austen's novels.

Coverage

Winners in each of the three divisions receive scholarships: First Place ($1,000), Second Place ($500), and Third Place ($250). Additionally, winners receive a one-year JASNA membership, publication of their essay on the JASNA website, and a set of Norton Critical Editions of Jane Austen's novels. First-place winners also receive free registration and two nights of lodging for the JASNA Annual General Meeting (transportation not included).

Eligibility

Open to students worldwide. Applicants must be enrolled in high school, college/university (at least six credit hours), or graduate school (at least three credit hours) during the contest year.

Requirements

Applicants must submit an essay based on the annual topic. For 2026, the topic focuses on 'Men and Boys in Jane Austen’s Novels.' High school students must choose characters from one or more novels; undergraduate and graduate students must choose characters from at least two novels. Essays should be written for a general audience.

How to apply

Submissions are accepted online via the official JASNA website. The portal opens in February 2026. Applicants should review the specific rules and formatting requirements on the official website before submitting.
