Overview

The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung offers fully-funded scholarships for international Master's and PhD students to pursue their studies in Germany. The foundation, named after the prominent Marxist theorist Rosa Luxemburg, supports research projects, educational programs, and publications that align with its ideological objectives of democratic socialism. The scholarship program aims to counteract social, political, and gender discrimination, giving preference to applications from women, students of non-academic and migrant backgrounds, the socially needy, and people with disabilities who demonstrate comparable achievements and commitment.

Coverage

Master's students receive a monthly grant of EUR 1,350. PhD students receive a monthly grant of EUR 1,450. Additionally, an extra mobility allowance of EUR 100 is provided. Healthcare support is included. Awardees will have the opportunity to explore Germany's culture and surroundings and delve into research on global pressing matters.

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to all international students, including Ethiopian citizens, for Master's and PhD degree programs. Applicants must be temporarily residing in Germany for study or research purposes and plan to return to their home country after completing their education. For Master's degrees, students must be enrolled at a state or state-recognized German university. For PhD degrees, exceptionally talented doctoral candidates from any discipline (excluding medical fields) are eligible, provided they have a promising topic for a doctoral thesis and a strong identification with and commitment to democratic socialism and its values. An excellent academic record is essential, and proficiency in German at the B2 level is required. Active engagement in social issues reflecting the values of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is also a key criterion. Applications from undergraduate and doctoral students from scientific and technical disciplines are actively encouraged, as are applications from graduates of technical colleges.

Requirements

Required documents typically include a Degree/Transcript, a Research Plan (for PhD candidates), a Passport, and a German Language Proficiency Certificate (B2 level). Additional documents may be specified in the official application form.

How to apply

All applicants must complete the application process via the official website. You will need to fill in your details as required in the application form, ensuring that all mandatory questions are answered and all necessary information is provided. Carefully review and complete the application form, then submit it through the designated online portal. Please note that the application page and forms are primarily available in German.

Notes

The scholarship aims to enable talented students to study in Germany without financial worries. The foundation actively encourages applications from individuals who align with its values of democratic socialism and social engagement.
