Overview

The UBC Public Scholars Award is a funded opportunity for doctoral students at the University of British Columbia (UBC) who are interested in connecting their research with public benefit and real-world impact. This initiative supports talented scholars from various disciplines to build strong community connections through innovative and collaborative research projects, encouraging them to work beyond traditional academic boundaries and contribute positively to society.

Coverage

Recipients can receive awards of up to CAD $10,000. PSI Scholars in good standing are eligible to apply separately for a one-time renewal award of up to CAD $10,000 for a second year. The funding can be used for research expenses, professional development, travel related to scholarly work, and may also be used as a student stipend if the student’s current funding source does not support the alternative project or scholarly activities.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled in a UBC doctoral program (such as PhD, EdD, or DMA), including part-time PhD students, at either the UBC Vancouver or UBC Okanagan campuses. As of August 31, 2026, applicants must have completed no more than 48 months of doctoral study. They must also be registered in a UBC doctoral program as of September 1, 2026. Applicants in their 6th year (48 to 60 months of doctoral study) will be considered only in exceptional circumstances and should receive approval from the PSI before applying. This award is open to international students.

Requirements

Required documents include a completed PSI Fellowship Application form, a Tri-agency CV or an existing Vanier-Banting CV, and a mandatory supervisor letter of support. Optional collaborator support letters may also be submitted. All recommendation or support letters must include the referee’s signature, which can be electronic or digital.

How to apply

Candidates must apply online. The application files and links, including the PSI Fellowship Application form and instructions, will be available on the PSI website during the application period. Applicants need to download, complete, and then upload the application form. They must also upload their Tri-agency CV or an existing Vanier-Banting CV. A mandatory supervisor letter of support must be submitted through a specific link provided on the PSI application page under “Application Procedures.”

Notes

Approximately 30 students from UBC Vancouver and 5 students from UBC Okanagan are selected for the program each year. PSI scholars are expected to participate in PSI events, engage with fellow scholars, and present their work at academic and public engagement activities such as “PhDs Go Public.” An important update regarding CV guidelines was issued on April 28, 2026; applicants should refer to the official application procedures for the latest details. All funded students, faculty, and collaborators will be asked to complete a questionnaire at the end of their funding/involvement.
