Overview

The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship is a fully funded program established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan. It aims to support foreign experts and scholars interested in conducting research on topics related to Taiwan, cross-street relations, the Asia-Pacific region, and science. Selected fellows will undertake cutting-edge research at Taiwanese universities or educational institutions for a duration of 3 to 12 months.

Coverage

This is a fully funded fellowship. Recipients will receive a monthly grant: NT$60,000 for Professors, Associate Professors, Research Fellows, or Associate Research Fellows; and NT$50,000 for Assistant Professors, Assistant Research Fellows, or Doctoral Candidates. The fellowship also covers one round-trip economy class air ticket to Taiwan (subsidy determined by MOFA) and accident insurance with NT$1 million coverage (including medical insurance for accidental injuries).

Eligibility

This fellowship is open to international students and scholars from all over the world. Eligible candidates include foreign professors, associate professors, assistant professors, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students in related fields at foreign universities. Research Fellows from overseas educational institutions are also welcome to apply. Applicants' area of specialization should include humanities related to social sciences, Taiwan, cross-street relations, mainland China, Asia Pacific, or other aspects of Chinese studies. Please note that while the program is generally open to international applicants, some specific fellowship positions (e.g., 12 APEC Fellowships) are dedicated to citizens of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member countries. Ethiopian students are eligible to apply.

Requirements

Applicants must submit the following documents: a Resume (including a list of publications), a Research Proposal, and either two letters of recommendation OR one letter of recommendation combined with a letter of agreement from the senior managing director of your organization.

How to apply

The application process involves two main steps. First, applicants must complete and upload all required documents through the online application system. Second, after completing the online application, applicants should print their complete application form and send all application documents by post to an R.O.C (Taiwan) Embassy or Representative Office in their home country.

Notes

The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship typically opens for applications in May and June each year. Successful recipients are expected to commence their research in Taiwan in early January of the following year. The total number of recipients is subject to MOFA’s annual budget.
