Overview

The UNHCR Internships Program offers paid internship opportunities for students and recent graduates from around the world. These internships are available at UNHCR offices in various countries and typically last between 2 to 6 months. Interns gain valuable work experience with the UN Refugee Agency and learn from professionals. Opportunities are available in different fields, and some positions may offer remote work.

Coverage

Eligible interns receive a monthly allowance to help cover food, transport, and living costs. Selected interns may also receive reimbursement for return travel expenses if they are traveling from another country. Both full-time and part-time interns can receive financial support, and remote interns are also eligible for an allowance.

Eligibility

This program is open to students and recent graduates from all countries, including Ethiopia. Applicants must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have graduated within the last two years. Your university or college must be accredited by UNESCO. Good English skills, at least B2 level, are required. Your field of study should be related to UNHCR’s work or be of interest to the organization. You are not eligible to apply if your father, mother, brother, or sister works at UNHCR as a staff member or affiliate, or if you have already completed the maximum internship period at UNHCR.

Requirements

To be eligible, you must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or be a recent graduate (within two years of graduation). Your academic institution must be accredited by UNESCO. You need to demonstrate good English skills (B2 level or higher). Your field of study should align with UNHCR's work. There are also restrictions regarding family members working at UNHCR and previous internship durations with the organization.

How to apply

Applications are submitted through the official UNHCR recruitment portal. First, you need to register on the portal and complete your profile with your educational background and other relevant details. Then, browse the available internships to find a position that matches your studies and skills. Once you find a suitable internship, open the listing and click “Apply.” Fill in the application form completely in English, review all your information carefully, and submit your application before the specific closing date for that position. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further stages of the selection process.

Notes

There is no single fixed application deadline for the UNHCR Internship Program. UNHCR offers internships throughout the year, and each specific internship position has its own individual application closing date. Applicants are encouraged to regularly check the official recruitment portal for new opportunities and their respective deadlines.
