Overview

The A*STAR Computing and Information Science (ACIS) Scholarship is a PhD scholarship in Singapore, hosted by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). It aims to attract and develop top talent interested in pursuing a PhD in computing and information science (CIS) disciplines. The scholarship prepares students for research careers in A*STAR, industry R&D labs, technology enterprises, spin-off companies, and academia. Scholars will engage in advanced research projects focusing on real-world problems such as deep learning for healthcare, machine learning models for data analytics, computational simulation, and advanced digital systems.

Coverage

Successful international candidates will receive a monthly stipend of SGD 4,550. The scholarship covers full tuition fees for the entire PhD duration, typically up to 4 years. Additional allowances are provided for books, computers, conferences, thesis preparation, and other miscellaneous support. Scholars may also receive funding for up to 12 months of overseas research attachment and have the opportunity to apply for the A*STAR International Fellowship for postdoctoral training. Recipients gain access to world-class research labs, industry collaborations, and exposure to real-world R&D projects in Singapore.

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to Singapore Citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents, and all international students, including Ethiopian citizens. Applicants must be applying for or currently pursuing a PhD in computing and information science disciplines. Candidates are required to hold at least a 2nd Upper Class Honours degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant field. While optional, submitting GRE scores is recommended to strengthen the application. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a computing research career in industry or academia, with a focus on areas such as AI, machine learning, data science, computing systems, or simulation. Candidates must also submit at least two referee reports, a research proposal, and full academic credentials. The final selection process involves multiple interview rounds with A*STAR leadership and research experts, and supervisor and research project approval are subject to A*STAR and partner institutions.

Requirements

To apply, you will need to submit a completed online application form for both the scholarship and PhD admission. Required documents include academic transcripts and degree certificates (in PDF format), at least two referee reports from academic or professional referees, and a research proposal outlining your intended PhD research area. Proof of academic qualification (e.g., Bachelor’s with Honours or equivalent) is mandatory. GRE scores are optional but highly recommended. Any additional documents required by A*STAR or its partner universities must also be provided.

How to apply

1. Visit the official A*STAR scholarship or Graduate Academy portal. 2. Apply for PhD admission at your chosen Singapore university (a partner institution). 3. Submit the A*STAR ACIS scholarship application form online. 4. Upload all required academic documents and your research proposal. 5. Arrange for at least two referee reports to be submitted on your behalf. 6. Submit GRE scores if available (optional). 7. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for multiple interview rounds with A*STAR research panels and leadership teams. 8. Final selection is based on academic merit, research potential, and supervisor approval. 9. Successful candidates will receive an offer confirmation from both A*STAR and the university.

Notes

The typical award period for PhD students is 4 years. Non-Singaporean scholars are subject to a 3-year service commitment in Singapore-based companies, preferably within CIS disciplines. Singapore-based companies include local and international companies registered with the Accounting & Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA). While under the scholarship, scholars must satisfy the requirements set by A*STAR in addition to the coursework requirements specified by their respective partner university.
