Overview

The APU MEXT University Recommendation Scholarship 2027 is a fully funded scholarship program in Japan for outstanding international graduate students. It is offered by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and awarded to students recommended by Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU). The scholarship aims to enhance the international competitiveness of Japanese universities and promote active exchange among international students.

Coverage

This is a fully funded scholarship. Benefits include a waiver of the admission fee, 100% coverage of tuition fees through the APU Tuition Reduction Scholarship, a monthly stipend of 144,000 JPY for living expenses, and economy class air travel from your home country to APU at the beginning and end of the scholarship program.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must be international students who intend to study abroad in Japan from overseas. You must be a national of a MEXT-designated country (applicants are required to check the official MEXT designated countries list provided by APU). Candidates must be born on or after April 2, 1992, and have achieved a GPA of at least 2.30 out of 3.00 in their most recent degree. Individuals currently serving in active military duty or employed as civilian staff by the military are not eligible. Those who have previously received a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship are generally ineligible, unless they have over three years of educational or work experience since the end of their scholarship, or were recipients of certain designated programs. Recipients must not receive any other scholarships that have not been approved for concurrent acceptance. Applicants must also meet the admission requirements for a graduate program at APU and be able to come to Japan during the specified time by APU.

Requirements

Applicants must first apply to Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) for a graduate program. Only English proficiency test scores from exams taken on or after March 15, 2025, will be considered valid. Please review the application guidelines released by MEXT for further details on required documents.

How to apply

To be considered for the MEXT University Recommendation (UR) Scholarship, you must first apply directly to Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) for a graduate program. APU will review all application documents and select suitable candidates to recommend to MEXT. Applicants who are selected for recommendation will be notified along with their final APU application results. MEXT will then make the final scholarship decision, with the final scholarship results expected by the end of June 2027.

Notes

The last date to apply is November 5, 2026, for September 2027 enrollment. Please note that the notification schedule may change depending on MEXT’s circumstances. There may also be changes to the 2027 scholarship conditions, so applicants are strongly encouraged to check the details on the official scholarship organization's website.
