This fellowship allows selected individuals to spend three months at the University of Birmingham in the UK, collaborating with leading academics. The program aims to strengthen global research partnerships and support innovative research addressing international challenges, providing an excellent opportunity to conduct research, build international networks, and gain academic experience.

Coverage

This is a fully funded fellowship. Selected fellows will receive travel expenses of up to £850 and a monthly stipend of £1500 to cover living expenses. On-campus accommodation can be booked on the fellow's behalf, with the cost deducted from the stipend, though availability is not guaranteed. Further information on private accommodation options and support is available upon request.

Eligibility

This fellowship is open to early-career researchers from Global South countries, including Ethiopia. Applicants must be affiliated with a university or research institution in a Global South country and demonstrate strong research potential. A key requirement is having completed a doctorate degree. Applicants should also have an interest in collaborative research projects and be working on global challenges and development-related topics. The program welcomes applications in subject areas related to education access and equity, global health, and sustainability and climate action, with some flexibility.

Requirements

Applicants usually need to identify and secure a Birmingham academic host/supervisor whose work aligns with their research interests. A strong research proposal is required, demonstrating alignment with global challenges and highlighting previous research achievements. The proposal should also focus on the potential impact of the collaboration.

How to apply

Applicants must apply through the official University of Birmingham portal. Before applying, it is crucial to identify a suitable host. This can be done by searching the university staff directories to find researchers whose work aligns with your interests, and then reaching out to them directly to explore the possibility of hosting your application.

Notes

The application deadline is May 29, 2026. Application results will be announced on June 25, 2026. The fellowship period is between July 2026 and June 2027, with funding available for a three-month duration within this period.
