Overview

Applications are now open for the Rowland Fellowship 2027 at Harvard University. This is a fully funded fellowship designed for early-career experimental scientists and engineers to conduct independent research in the United States. The fellowship allows individuals to establish their own labs and pursue groundbreaking ideas within a highly collaborative environment at Harvard University. Fellows will also have the opportunity to teach undergraduates for at least one semester. The program aims to advance the early careers of experimental scientists and engineers, fostering high-risk, creative research.

Coverage

This is a fully funded fellowship. Selected fellows receive a salary starting at approximately $89,999 per year, dedicated lab space, and an annual research budget of about $225,000. Benefits also include funding to hire research staff, travel and research support, and access to Harvard facilities. Fellows have full rights to establish their labs and benefit from an interdisciplinary, interactive environment in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They also receive generous start-up funds for equipment, access to staff scientists/engineers for experimental setup design, shared research equipment at the Institute and Harvard, and mentoring in lab culture, writing, budgeting, career development, and leadership.

Eligibility

This fellowship is open to applicants worldwide, including Ethiopian students. Applicants must be early-career experimental scientists and engineers. They should have completed (or be near completion of) a PhD, with the PhD received after May 1, 2025, for the 2027 cycle. Fellows must have completed their doctoral degree prior to starting their Fellowship term. Candidates should conduct experimental research in science or engineering and not be currently established as independent faculty. It is ideal for PhD graduates, early-career researchers, scientists in experimental fields, and candidates aiming for academic careers.

Requirements

Applicants should upload the following materials: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae (CV), a research proposal (maximum 3 pages), and three letters of recommendation. Only applications submitted through the Harvard Careers website will be considered for the position.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Harvard Careers posting on the official Rowland Institute website. The link to the official application page is provided on the Rowland Institute website. Only applications submitted through the Harvard Careers website will be considered.

Notes
