Overview

The Birmingham University Global South Fellowship Program 2026 is a funded professional development opportunity for early-career researchers from universities in the Global South. Fellows will gain insight into research, training, and administration at the University of Birmingham (UK) and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (USA). The program promotes research collaboration and partnership development, with a focus on areas like global health, climate action, sustainability, and education access and equity.

Coverage

This is a fully funded fellowship. It covers travel expenses up to £850 and provides a monthly stipend of £1500 for up to three months to cover living and accommodation costs. There are no tuition or research fees. On-campus accommodation may be booked, with costs deducted from the stipend, but availability is not guaranteed.

Eligibility

Applicants must be early-career researchers from the Global South and must have completed a doctorate degree. Ethiopia is considered part of the Global South, so Ethiopian students are eligible.

Requirements

Required documents include a CV, educational documents, English language test scores, publication materials, and other relevant supporting documents. Applicants must also identify a host researcher at the University of Birmingham or University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign whose work aligns with their research interests.

How to apply

First, search the university staff directories of the University of Birmingham or University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to find a suitable host researcher. Contact them directly to discuss the possibility of hosting your application. Once a host is identified, apply through the online application form. The application requires personal details, academic history, English language proficiency, employment and professional experience, details of your proposed research, information about your selected academic contact, and an explanation of how the research aligns with your current work and how the fellowship will aid your career development.

Notes

The application deadline is May 29, 2026. Application results will be announced by June 25, 2026. The fellowship period is between July 2026 and June 2027, but the funding is available for a maximum of three months within this period.
