Overview

The EPFL Summer Internship 2027 in Switzerland offers fully funded research opportunities for international undergraduate and master's students. This prestigious program allows participants to join a research group at EPFL for a period of 8 to 12 weeks during the summer of 2027. The internship is divided into two main tracks: Life Sciences and Engineering, Science, and Technology.

Coverage

For the Life Sciences track, selected students receive a monthly living allowance of CHF 1,800, totaling CHF 3,600 for the two-month program, to cover housing and living expenses. Housing is provided in single or double rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Travel costs are largely covered, with reimbursement up to CHF 1,000 for overseas flights and CHF 500 for shorter distances. For the Engineering, Science, and Technology track, selected students receive a monthly living allowance of CHF 1,800 to cover housing and living expenses. Travel costs will be refunded, and visa assistance along with an invitation letter will be provided. Both tracks are fully funded.

Eligibility

This internship is open to all international students, including Ethiopian citizens. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program; students enrolled in PhD programs are not eligible. For the Life Sciences track, applicants must have successfully completed at least their second Bachelor year up to the first year of a Master's degree in fields such as biology, biophysics, chemistry, bioengineering, bioinformatics, quantitative biology, genetics, medical, or other life sciences-related programs. A minimum GPA equivalent to 3.75/4.0 or being in the top 5% of their class is required. A strong interest in pursuing a career in life sciences and a basic understanding of life sciences are essential; previous lab experience is a plus. For the Engineering, Science, and Technology track, applicants must have successfully completed at least their second Bachelor year in any field of Engineering, Science, and Technology.

Requirements

The application process is entirely online. Required documents and information include short personal essays, explanations for lab choices, and university transcript(s) (Bachelor's and Master's if applicable) or an official list of classes and grades. For the Life Sciences track, contact details for one referee are required, and a letter of recommendation is part of the application. Specific questions regarding GPA and short personal and scientific essays must be addressed. Applicants must complete the online application in one sitting as it cannot be saved and returned to later.

How to apply

Interested students must apply online through the official EPFL website. There are separate application portals for the Life Sciences track (apply via https://www.epfl.ch/schools/sv/education/summer-research-program/how-to-apply/) and the Engineering, Science, and Technology track (apply via https://eee.epfl.ch/apply/). Applicants should follow the specific instructions for their chosen track and upload all required documents.

For the Engineering, Science, and Technology track, the duration is 8 to 12 weeks, with exact start and end dates discussed during the recruiting process. The application deadline for the Engineering, Science, and Technology track is November 1, 2026. The application deadline for the Life Sciences track is November 15, 2026, at 23:59 CET.
