Overview

The METI Japan Internship Program (JIP) is a fully funded internship offered by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Government of Japan. It provides international students and young professionals with the opportunity to gain work experience and training in Japanese companies. The program lasts for 6 weeks and aims to host 80 interns across 80 companies in Japan. No IELTS is required, and there is no application fee.

Coverage

This is a fully-funded internship. Benefits for in-person participants include round-trip airfare to Japan (economy class), travel insurance for the visit to Japan and internship, provision of a mobile phone for safety and necessary communication, visa support (costs covered by the Office), accommodation arranged by the host company, and transportation arrangements from the training venue to the company. A daily allowance is also provided. For online course participants, the Office provides the necessary computer, internet, and communication tools.

Eligibility

Ethiopian students are eligible as Ethiopia is an OECD/DAC-listed country. Applicants must be between 18 and 39 years old, have a university education (currently a student at Bachelor's or Master's level, or a graduate), possess English or Japanese proficiency, and not be currently residing in Japan. Candidates should aspire to engage in roles such as engineers, researchers, interpreters, sales professionals responsible for overseas expansion, or legal and accounting professionals at Japanese companies. Availability for the full 6-week internship period is required.

Requirements

Applicants are required to complete an online application.

How to apply

To apply, first review the internship overview on the official website. After confirming the details, an entry button will become clickable. Click the button to register your email address. You will then receive an email containing the URL to the application form, which you must fill out and submit. An "Application Complete" email will confirm successful submission.

Notes

This program offers work experience and does not constitute employment. The internship has both in-person and online course options. In-person courses have two terms (October-November and November-December). The online course runs from August-September. Information sessions are available as recorded videos.
