The NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship in the Netherlands is a fully funded opportunity for scientists, scholars, journalists, writers, and artists who are at risk and face difficulties in continuing their work. This international fellowship provides a temporary relocation for 5 months in Amsterdam, Netherlands, allowing participants to pursue independent research projects without interruption. The program focuses on projects within the humanities or social sciences and partners with prestigious institutions like the University of Amsterdam and Maastricht University.
Coverage
This is a fully funded program. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of €3500 to cover necessary expenses. Ethiopian students, as fellows from low-income countries, can request additional financial support. Fellows living outside Europe will receive a return flight ticket. Accommodation is provided at subsidized rates. Participants will have access to an office space equipped with a laptop, phone, printer, and internet connection, as well as full library services. The fellowship also includes participation in creative writing workshops and weekly academic seminars, along with opportunities to organize public events, cultural/social activities, and professional workshops.
Eligibility
This fellowship is open to international researchers, with NIAS making a specific effort to attract talented scholars from Africa, including Ethiopia. Applicants affiliated with institutions boycotted by the Dutch state are not eligible. For scientific research proposals, applicants must hold a PhD and possess at least 3 years of postdoctoral research experience. For artistic, journalistic, or writing-focused proposals, a PhD is not required, but applicants must demonstrate at least 7 years of professional experience in their respective fields. All proposed projects must fall within the humanities or social sciences. Applicants must also possess excellent English language skills.

Notes
NIAS aims to maintain a balanced year group in terms of academic cultures, gender, career stage, and disciplines. English is the working language of the institute. Fellows are required to attend the Institute for four days a week.
