Overview

Applications are open for the OIST Research Internship in Japan for the Fall 2026 intake. This is a fully funded internship for international students, with a duration of 3 to 6 months. The internship takes place at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and runs from October 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. It is open to enrolled Bachelor's and Master's students, or those who have recently graduated with a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

Coverage

This is a fully funded program. Benefits include an internship allowance of 2,400 JPY per day, an OIST Shuttle Bus Pass, one direct round-trip air ticket to Japan, furnished on-campus or off-campus housing, and administrative support for visa processing and other needs.

Eligibility

This internship is open to students from any country, with no nationality restrictions. Applicants must be currently enrolled in the last two years of a Bachelor's degree program, any year of a Master's degree program, or have recently graduated with a Bachelor's or Master's degree from any university. If currently enrolled, approval from your home institution is required. The academic background should be appropriate to the desired host research unit at OIST. The program is intended for those seeking more research experience and interested in potentially joining OIST's PhD Program later. No IELTS or TOEFL test is required.

Requirements

Applicants must submit an updated Curriculum Vitae, a Statement of Interest, a Letter of Recommendation, Academic Transcripts, and an ID Photo. All required documents must be prepared in English and uploaded as PDF files through the online application system.

Notes

The Fall 2026 internship period is from October 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. This schedule is tentative and subject to change. Research interns from Japanese universities/institutions are required to have their own insurance (e.g., Gakkensai and Gakkenbai or similar coverage) if accepted.
