Overview

The RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) Summer Internship in Germany offers undergraduate students from specific regions the opportunity to pursue research internships at leading German universities and research institutions. This international program, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and administered by DAAD, aims to promote student exchange in natural sciences, engineering, and life sciences. Approximately 300 scholarships are available annually, providing a chance to gain valuable research experience and explore further study opportunities in Germany. The internship typically lasts around three months.

Coverage

This is a fully-funded internship. Benefits include a monthly scholarship (e.g., 992 Euros for students from the US, UK, and Ireland; CAD 7,000 for Canadian students via Mitacs partnership). DAAD covers health, accident, and personal liability insurance. Interns also receive an international travel allowance to cover travel expenses to Germany, and a 160 Euro travel allowance for the mandatory RISE Germany meeting in Heidelberg in July 2027. Host universities, universities of applied sciences, and research institutes provide assistance with housing. Interns receive mentorship and guidance from doctoral students and researchers.

Eligibility

Applicants must be undergraduate students who have completed at least two years of their degree program by the time the internship begins. They should be enrolled in fields such as biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, earth sciences, engineering, natural sciences, or life sciences. A critical requirement is that applicants must be studying at accredited universities or colleges in North America (USA, Canada), Ireland, or Britain. International students must prove they have studied in one of these countries for more than 12 months by the application deadline. Applicants must maintain their undergraduate status after completing the internship. German citizens are eligible only if they can prove they have lived outside Germany for at least six years. Knowledge of the German language is not essential as the working language will be English; IELTS/TOEFL is not required, but a good knowledge of English is expected.

Requirements

To apply, you will need to submit the following documents: - Curriculum vitae (CV) - Motivation letter (a separate one for each project you wish to apply for) - Up-to-date College/University transcript - Letter of reference - Certificate of enrollment/Verification from your university - List of courses completed by the time the internship begins

How to apply

All applicants must apply online through the RISE database. First, you need to create a DAAD ID and register to access the database. Ensure all necessary documents are submitted, as only complete applications will be considered. Applications for the summer 2027 internship are open from October 15 to November 30, 2026, at 11:59 pm CET (Central European Time). Letters of reference can be submitted until December 15, 2026.

Notes

Ranking by providers will take place between January 14 and 27, 2027. The announcement of all RISE internship positions will be made around February or March 2027. Recent graduates may explore the RISE Professional program.
