Overview

The United Nations–Nippon Foundation Fellowship on Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (UNNF OALOS) is a nine-month, fully funded fellowship designed for mid-level professionals and government officials from developing countries. It provides advanced training in ocean affairs, the law of the sea, and related marine sciences to support national management frameworks.

Coverage

The fellowship is fully funded and includes a monthly stipend, return economy-class airfare, medical insurance, and a book allowance of US$100 per month during the second phase. Fellows are responsible for their own accommodation.

Eligibility

Applicants must be nationals of a developing country (including Ethiopia), aged between 25 and 45, and hold at least a first university degree. Candidates must be mid-level professionals or government officials working directly on ocean affairs or the law of the sea.

Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to conduct independent advanced academic research. Required deliverables include a 100-page written thesis, a structured research presentation, and an ocean governance matrix. Fellows must commit to returning to their home country upon completion of the program.
