Overview

The UNU Junior Fellows Internship is a paid, 6-month program hosted by the United Nations University (UNU) at its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. It is designed for graduate-level students and young professionals globally, aiming to provide practical application of knowledge gained during graduate studies within a supportive working environment. The program includes a one-week orientation and offers opportunities to contribute to seminars, conferences, and academic symposiums, providing training, guidance, and hands-on experience within the UN system.

Coverage

Interns receive a monthly stipend to cover a portion of basic living costs, including transportation. They also get free access to the UNU headquarters’ library and gym, as well as dedicated office space and other facilities.

Eligibility

Applicants must be currently pursuing or have recently completed (within the last two years) postgraduate studies (Master’s or Doctoral) in a field related to UNU’s work. Candidates must be under 32 years of age and have no more than 5 years of relevant work experience. Native or fluent proficiency in written and spoken English is required, along with excellent research, writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills, creativity in problem-solving, and advanced computer skills (MS Office, ICT tools, Microsoft Excel). A demonstrated interest in the work of the UN and UNU is essential.

Requirements

Required documents include a current CV, Cover Letter, the UNU Application Form, the UNU Funding Form, two letters of recommendation, English language certification, and a copy of your passport.

How to apply

Applications are submitted through the online application form. Applicants need to answer position-related questions, fill in and upload the Application Form (either in MS Word or printed and filled by hand), fill in and upload the Funding Form, and attach all other required documents. After reviewing the declaration, applicants must click "Apply" to submit their application.

Notes

The program duration is approximately 6 months (24 weeks), running from September 2026 to February 2027. Candidates with fluency in both English and French may have additional opportunities to work with UNU offices in Paris.
