Overview

The Walter J. Travis Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually by The Walter J. Travis Society, Inc. It honors Walter J. Travis's significant contributions to the game of golf as a champion amateur golfer, golf course architect, turf grass expert, and golf journalist. The scholarship aims to support students pursuing careers related to golf or outstanding amateur golfers.

Coverage

This scholarship provides an award of $1,000. Five awards are granted each year. The funds can be used for any legitimate educational expense. Awards are renewable for subsequent years, subject to re-application and meeting specific criteria.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled or matriculated as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited two-year or four-year college/university for the upcoming Fall semester. The scholarship is open to students pursuing careers in landscape design/golf course architecture, golf course turf grass management/golf course superintendent, professional golf management, club professional, or sports journalism with a special interest in golf. Additionally, outstanding amateur high school/college/university golfers are eligible based on their competitive record, and they do not need to be pursuing a golf-related career. Ethiopian students are eligible as there are no nationality restrictions mentioned.

Applicants must submit a complete online application form, which includes essays. Official transcripts must be sent DIRECTLY from the applicant's college/university to [email protected]; transcripts sent by the applicant will be discarded. Similarly, letters of recommendation must be sent DIRECTLY from the recommenders to [email protected]; letters sent by the applicant will be discarded. For renewal applications, at least one letter of recommendation must be from one of the student’s professors, and evidence of maintaining a 3.00 GPA or higher is required.
