Overview

The Harris Social Impact Fellowship is an 11-month, full-time program designed by the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy. It targets recent graduates and early-career professionals with strong technical or STEM skills who are passionate about using evidence and data to drive social change. The fellowship takes place at the University of Chicago Hyde Park Campus in Chicago, USA, from July 2027 to June 2028. It combines intensive academic coursework with immersive learning and a capstone project.

Coverage

This is a fully funded fellowship. Fellows receive a stipend of $75,000 to cover living and healthcare expenses. An additional $21,000 is provided to fully cover the academic credential costs. Benefits also include professional development, mentorship from policy leaders, career coaching, access to an unparalleled network of practitioners, teachers, and alumni, and an annual retreat.

Eligibility

Applicants must be recent college graduates or early-career professionals who have completed a bachelor's degree prior to the fellowship start. They must demonstrate a strong capacity for serious technical, quantitative, or analytical work through coursework, research, or work experience. A commitment to full-time, in-person residence in Chicago for the entire duration of the fellowship is required. Important Note: The University of Chicago cannot sponsor visas for this fellowship. Applicants must already hold a U.S. visa that permits participation in this non-degree program. Ethiopian students are eligible if they meet these visa requirements.

Requirements

Required application documents include a Resume, Motivation Statement, Technical Experience Statement, a Letter of Recommendation, and Transcripts.

How to apply

The application process is online. Visit the official application portal (link provided in the 'applyUrl' field). You will need to create an account to start your application. When applying, select the '2027 Non-Degree Programs' option. Carefully fill out the application form and upload all required documents. Shortlisted applicants may be required to complete a technical assessment. Selected applicants will then be invited for a virtual interview, followed by an on-campus interview day. Review your application thoroughly and submit it before the deadline.

Notes

The fellowship aims to select 15 individuals. The program includes 8 weeks of faculty-led coursework in research methods, data analytics, economic analysis, and analytical politics, followed by 9 months of immersive learning with leading research centers and policy institutes. Fellows will work on real-world social impact challenges and complete a capstone project.
