Overview

The OIST Visiting Scholars Program (TSVP) invites experienced researchers, academics, and faculty members from around the world to conduct independent research at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology in Japan. The program fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across fields such as mathematics, physics, computational sciences, chemistry, engineering, and life sciences.

Coverage

This is a fully funded program providing round-trip airfare, on-campus accommodation, and a daily allowance for living expenses. Office space and access to library and computing resources are provided. In exceptional cases, salary support may be requested if evidence of need is provided.

Eligibility

Open to international researchers, including those from Ethiopia. Applicants must hold a PhD and be independent researchers with a standing equivalent to a senior postdoctoral researcher, junior group leader, or faculty member. Current students are not eligible.

Requirements

Applicants must submit an updated CV (including publication list), a 1–2 page research proposal, a title and abstract for a general-audience lecture, and optional proposals for seminars or outreach activities. Applications must be submitted via the official Interfolio portal.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted through the official Interfolio portal linked on the OIST website. Applications sent via email are not accepted.

Notes

Visits typically range from 3 to 12 months. Scholars are expected to give a general-audience lecture within the first month of their visit. Note that the standard Visiting Scholar appointment does not include laboratory access; those requiring lab access should apply for the 'Experimental Visiting Scholars' program instead.
