Stanford Science Fellowships 2027 in USA

The Stanford Science Fellowships 2027, offered by Stanford University in the USA, provide an exceptional opportunity for early-career scientists to pursue fundamental experimental or theoretical research in the natural sciences. This is a fully-funded fellowship providing comprehensive support for three years. Fellows will receive an annual stipend of $98,000, along with Stanford University benefits. Up to $10,000 per year is available for supplemental research and professional development funds. Relocation expenses are covered up to $2,500. Additionally, eligible fellows may receive supplemental childcare assistance grants and visa expense assistance. Fellows will also benefit from participation in community-building and professional development activities and have the opportunity to work with Stanford faculty in research groups.

Applicants must be exceptional early-career scientists focused on fundamental experimental or theoretical research in natural science disciplines. Proposals primarily addressing social sciences are not eligible. Applicants must have earned their PhD within the last three years at the start of the fellowship. Applicants must have no more than two years of prior postdoctoral experience at another institution. A strong record of scientific achievement and clear intellectual drive is required, along with a commitment to collaboration and engagement with a diverse community of scholars. International scholars from all nationalities are eligible to apply. However, applicants must meet applicable US visa requirements. International scholars generally need to qualify for a J-1 visa; an F-1 extension may be suitable in some cases. H-1B employment visa holders are not eligible. Applicants cannot hold a paid or unpaid position at Stanford during the selection process (which lasts through the end of February). Current Stanford graduate students and postdocs are not eligible. Prospective postdocs who will begin their Stanford appointment before March 1, 2027, are also ineligible.

Three letters of recommendation (a letter from the candidate’s PhD advisor is recommended). A career statement (up to two pages) describing career goals, relevant experience, and contribution to the Stanford Science Fellows Program. A research statement (up to two pages, with an additional page for references if required) explaining the research problem, what could be accomplished within three to five years, and how Stanford can support the proposed research.

The application process is online through Academic Jobs Online (AJO). Applicants must upload their CV, cover letter, career statement, research statement, and ensure recommendation letters are submitted directly to AJO before the deadline. Applicants should identify and contact potential Stanford faculty members with whom they wish to collaborate. At least one Stanford faculty member must agree to host the applicant before the fellowship can be awarded. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Stanford faculty from departments across the natural sciences. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a Zoom interview with a panel of faculty, typically during the first two weeks of December. Applicants must select a primary research area from categories such as astronomy and astrophysics, biological sciences, chemistry, earth and oceans, mathematics and statistics, experimental physics, and theory and simulation.

The fellowship appointment lasts for three years, typically beginning on September 1, 2027, and ending August 31, 2030. A start date of July 1 or August 1 may also be possible, but no later than September 1. The program is open to applicants from all backgrounds and will be evaluated in conformance with applicable laws.
