Overview

The British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowship is a 12-month postdoctoral program hosted by the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh. It supports early-career researchers from ODA-recipient countries (including Ethiopia) to conduct interdisciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences.

Coverage

The fellowship provides a bursary of £2,500 per month, coverage of travel expenses, desk space at IASH, library access, and academic mentoring. Fellows spend 10 months in Edinburgh and 2 months in their home country for knowledge exchange.

Eligibility

Applicants must be postdoctoral researchers based in an ODA-recipient country where the British Council operates. Ethiopia is explicitly listed as an eligible country.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent research experience at the time of application. You must propose an independent research project that aligns with the British Council's vision of building trust, peace, and prosperity. You must be able to reside in Edinburgh for the first 10 months of the program.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted through the official IASH fellowship portal. Required documents typically include an application form, a CV, a detailed research proposal, a cover letter, and 2-3 confidential references.

Notes

The fellowships begin in January 2027. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary research, cultural exchange, and engagement with British Council offices.
