Fellows will engage in an AI governance research project or work on applied projects, aiming to deepen their knowledge and contribute to the field of responsible AI development and ethical use.
Coverage
This is a fully funded fellowship. Benefits include a stipend of £12,000 (British Pounds) for the three-month duration, coverage for travel expenses to and from London, and meals. GovAI will also sponsor a 3-month temporary UK Work Visa for international fellows and provide dedicated office space. Participants will receive mentorship from leading experts, develop a research proposal, and produce an output such as a report or article. The program also offers networking opportunities with AI governance experts through Q&A sessions, workshops, and social events, alongside skill-building opportunities and career path discussions.
Eligibility
The fellowship is open to all nationalities, welcoming applicants from anywhere in the world. Candidates from diverse professional backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including those from government, universities (academia), private companies (industry), and non-profit organizations (civil society). While a specific degree is not the most important factor, applicants should be students, graduates, or individuals with research or professional experience in related areas such as political science, computer science, economics, history, or law. The program is suitable for early-career individuals to experienced researchers or policy professionals.
Requirements
Selection criteria for the fellowship include the quality of work, relevant expertise, judgment, and team fit. Applicants should be prepared to conduct independent research or work on applied projects related to AI governance. The fellowship offers two tracks: a Research Track for those interested in producing or consuming research and policy analysis, and an Applied Track for individuals with experience in areas like communications, policy, issue advocacy, events, research management, program management, operations, or fundraising, working on projects pitched by GovAI or partner organizations.
How to apply
The application process is entirely online. Applications for the GovAI Winter Fellowship 2027 are expected to open in June 2026. Interested candidates should visit the official GovAI website (governance.ai) for detailed instructions and to submit their application once the portal is open. There is no application fee.
