Funding fully funded Overview
The IIAS Asia in the World Fellowship is a fully funded, nine-month residential program designed for early- to mid-career researchers and knowledge professionals. Its primary goal is to foster innovative research and global collaboration, promoting a multi-centered approach to knowledge creation that extends beyond traditional regional or disciplinary boundaries. The program is structured in two distinct phases: an initial three-month residency at one of the co-host institutions located in Asia, Africa, Latin America, or Europe (Phase 1), followed by a six-month residency at IIAS, Leiden University, in the Netherlands (Phase 2). Two cohorts are selected annually: Cohort 1 runs from September 2027 to May 2028, and Cohort 2 from March 2028 to November 2028.
Coverage
This is a fully funded fellowship. Funded academic fellows will receive a monthly stipend of €1,250 during their six-month residency at IIAS in Leiden. A housing allowance of €1,200 per month will also be provided during Phase 2 (the Leiden residency). Fellows will be granted a travel allowance covering approved travel expenses between their home country, the co-host institution, the Netherlands, and their return home. Additional benefits include access to IIAS office space, seminar rooms, the university library, and a screening room. Participants will also have opportunities to engage in workshops, professional development activities, and various IIAS community events. Visa support from Leiden University for the Netherlands residency is also provided.
Eligibility
Applicants from all over the world are eligible to apply. The program is open to early- to mid-career researchers and knowledge professionals. Applicants must choose one of three categories: Category A (Academic, Funded), Category B (Academic, Self-Funded), or Category C (Independent Professional, Self-Funded). For Categories A and B, applicants must hold a PhD degree or be scheduled to complete their PhD defense no later than September 2026. Independent professionals, such as journalists, writers, diplomats, policymakers, and curators, with relevant experience, are eligible to apply under Category C. A good command of English is required for all applicants.
Requirements
The initial application requires the submission of the IIAS Fellowship Application Form, a CV or Resume, a Work Plan, and a List of Publications. Shortlisted candidates will subsequently be asked to provide two reference letters and a short video presentation.
How to apply
The application process is conducted online via the IIAS website. Applicants must complete the online application form, ensuring all required information is filled in accurately and carefully.
